Death Came Riding On State-Sponsored 'Miracle'

Rajesh Ramachandran
THE ATHEISTIC Left leadership that rules Kerala, its government, the media and the society at large have blood on their hands. Various government departments have been, for many decades, working a “ miracle” on the Ponnambalamedu hill in the core area of the Periyar Tiger Reserve, a couple of kilometres from the Sabarimala temple.
The shrine is in a valley and the hill top, almost jutting out towards the valley, can be viewed clearly from down below.
On the auspicious day of ‘ Makara Sankranthi’ ( January 14), as the temple door opens after the evening puja amidst frenzied saranam calls, a mysterious light appears on the hill top. Malayalam TV channels ( the All India Radio inaugurated the live commentary long ago) erupt in hysteria claiming the sighting of the ‘ celestial light’, the miraculous ‘ makara vilakku’ or ‘ jyotis’. The next day most Malayalam newspapers would carry front page stories of the miracle.
And the 102 pilgrims who got killed on Friday in the stampede at Pullumedu ( inside the same tiger reserve core area and at roughly the same altitude as Ponnambalamedu) were camping for days to see the miracle. They saw the “ Gods lighting the lamp for lord Ayappa” and were rushing back to their vehicles when they were crushed to death.
Forget about the security lapse and the terrible mismanagement. The fact remains that the government deliberately perpetuates the mystery around the miracle lamp, allegedly lit by the temple management, the Travancore Devaswom Board, with the help of the state police and the collusion of the forest and electricity departments.
Nobody knows the exact origin of the ritual. According to one school of rationalists, the original inhabitants of the hills had a special puja on this occasion with lit torches, coinciding with the temple puja below, which more sophisticated pilgrims mistook for celestial light.
Later, when the Kerala State Electricity Board ( KSEB) began its Pampa hydro- electric project in the late Sixties and early Seventies, an engineer and his coworkers, all Ayappa devotees, re- started the puja at the Ponnambalamedu hill top.
It soon became a rage in the state. The radio commentary, organised by devotees, helped not just to publicise the event, but let the KSEB workers time the lighting of the lamp with the opening of the temple doors. I had met and interviewed a couple of retired KSEB employees, still in Thiruvananthapuram, who were part of the earlier lamp- lighting expeditions.
According to them, the procedure was very simple: After a puja at the designated spot ( the devaswom board has now built a concrete platform for the miracle), a large vessel with a heap of camphor in it would be lit and raised thrice and then snuffed out with a wet rag. End of the magic.
As the miracle raked in the moolah, the government- controlled Devaswom Board stepped in. Ever since, the government and the media have been fooling millions of devotees from across south India. In fact, most Malayalees know the fraud and hence avoid the mad miracle rush.

Hats off, Rajesh, for telling the truth about this phenomenon. After the 1999 stampede in which 53 pilgrims were killed, I had attended a seminar organised at Pathanamthitta by the Forest Department to try to evolve a consensus on how to avoid such accidents in Sabarimala. My short address to the delegates (most of them leaders of Hindu organisations) pointing out the danger of introducing the element of frenzy in a mammoth gathering of pilgrims, by lighting the Makarajyothi, brought the seminar to sudden end. I just managed to escape without getting beaten up.

Thank you so much! I don't know whether I could have done it had I been in Kerala. Why, even NDTV killed my story on this fraud after just one bulletin. Now, I can't even access those interviews and great visuals.

Dear Rajesh,
It was heartening and encouraging to read your post. I had written several posts in my blog; the fact that the blog had an unprecedented rate of hits show that the public wants to know the truth, despite the hypocritical and self-deceptive majority. The only further course would be to take the matter to the court or support who already has filed a suit.

Do go thru the posts at your convenience.

regards

Venugopal sir
million thanks for sending this link.

i guess it is my post on this issue which prompted you to do it. the point i was trying to make was this. these frenzied devotees know fully well that the makaravilakku is lit by the tribals with the help of KSEB. i know this for sure cos during my commute says, the devotees were my travel companions during the sabarimala season. it is from them that i heard that the makaravilaku is a man made 'miracle'. yet they go to witness it. i can bet that even if the lighting process is done in full view of the devotees, the frenzied reactions will not lose their intensity.the intervention of human agency in the makara vilakku will make no difference to the pilgrims.i think we are oversimplifying matters if we attribute the devotion to the miracle of makaravilakku, which anyway most dont believe is a miracle.

this being the situation infrastructure should be put in place and regulatory measures enforced to avoid such terrible accidents.there is enough money from the sabarimala devotion to build world class structures all the way from the foothills. where's all that money going?

Rajesh Ramachandran,
not surprising that NDTV killed your story. it can only be the aiyyapa devotees in the organisation who did it. when i commuted in the first class of madras mail,i used to have long conversations with the CEOs, IT professionals, doctors, Chartered accountants from tamilnadu and Andhra who go to sabarimala every year. during my second class ommuting days, i 've had discussions with the devotees who were from all sections of society.their devotion goes beyond the makaravilakku, which is only the icing.

but it's tragic your story didnt get repeasted slot in NDTV. i would have loved to see it.any chance of you tubing it? it should get the visibility it deserves.
